Common Piano Problems

Whilst most pianos play faultlessly for years and years without much in the way of attention except for tuning, when pianos get older or they’ve been stored in a garage and/or not been used for some time then they can develop problems.

sticky piano keys

Sticking notes

This can be due to a variety of causes. If the piano has been stored in a slightly damp environment they felt bushes inside the action and the keys can swell slightly and cause the notes to feel sluggish or sticky.

This can usually be cured by lubricating the offending parts which can sometimes be deep within the action. This requires the notes in the action being dismantled and lubricated or the keys taken out and lubricated, most of which can be done in your home.

Another cause of sticking notes can be the tapes disintegrating due to age. These are found at the front of the action on an upright and it’s fairly easy to see which ones have gone. If only one or two are perished and the others are fairly sound then the decayed ones can be replaced.

However, sometimes they are all in state of precarious disintegration and all of the tapes have to be replaced. This is best done by taking the action away, replacing all the tapes and rebuilding it.

piano notes out of tune

Odd notes coming out of tune

This is often due to loose wrest pins. These are the black pegs that the strings are attached to. The only thing that keeps them from coming undone is the tightness of the fit of the wrest pins in the plank which is the wooden block that they are fitted into (not always visible). Sometimes due to age and wear and tear the wrest pins become loose.

This can be cured by driving to pins slightly further home or by replacing the wrest pin with a slightly larger one. This can sometimes mean that the string will also have to be replaced as it looses elasticity over time and can break with replacing the pin.

This can be done in your home although some bass strings may have to be specially ordered should they need replacement.

Out of tune piano

Piano not having been tuned for a long time

Over time, if not tuned regularly a piano will start to loose pitch and become flat. Not only will it start to sound out of tune with itself but the note A (440hz at concert pitch) will loose pitch and become flat.

Pianos sound best at the pitch which they were designed to be and generally, the sharper they are the brighter they sound although tuning a piano above concert pitch is not generally recommended unless there is a specific reason and the piano is capable of taking the extra strain.

There are tons of pressure exerted by the strings on the iron frame so it’s so surprise that they tend to come out of tune and go flat over time.

A piano that has not been tuned for some time may not hold its tune as well as one that has been tuned regularly so regular tuning is highly recommended.

What Our CUSTOMERS are saying

Thanks Pete for tuning my compact Bentley piano today and for coming out in such awful snowy weather 😊 It sounds beautiful now and I’m going to really enjoy my lessons now that it sounds so fantastic.

Thanks for the beginners tips too they were very helpful. Will definitely book in again when it’s out of tune again.

I’m pleased and relieved to hear that it has no serious problems or needs any major repair considering its age lol 😂

Louise Griffin

Wonderful experience. So pleased to have my old piano tuned after years of neglect, it sounds so different now. Highly recommend, thank you!

Pete tuned my piano yesterday and did a great job. My daughter is very happy with it and looking forward to her next lesson tonight! I’m so pleased to have found a new piano tuner 🙂

I’m also a professional pianist so I always give the piano a quick play after a tuning just to make sure that everything is ok from the pianists point of view. Often the impression of a piano from the playing point of view is slightly different from that of the piano tuner’s. A piano can sometimes play better than might be expected!

If time is allowing I sometimes polish the pedals of some of the other brasses. It’s amazing what a difference a few minutes of the right kind of polishing can do. I often give the keys a quick clean too. It’s surprising how much dirt can be on the keyboard without anybody really knowing it.
